Once in a while, something comes along on Facebook that sets off your alcohol radar. This picture of a ‘wine advent calendar’ caught my eye.
Now, I know the odds are good that someone is just trying to be clever and irreverent, but think about this one for a second. When you imagine drinking or merely sharing in a bottle of wine each day, for 24 days or so, what thoughts enter your mind?
• What’s the big deal?
• That’s crazy?
• Ah, whatever, it’s the holidays…?
Not sure of your personal reaction, but even as a social drinker, I couldn’t stand to be even mildly intoxicated four days in a row, let alone twenty-four. In addition to the health consequences of drinking in excess of the Low Risk Drinking Guidelines, I think my liver and kidneys would shrink up like a prune and two raisins.
Even for the hardest-core wine lover, taking days off drinking is an important strategy to maximize your health and minimize your risk for dependence.
