Some folk are working hard to reduce the harms related to drinking. In an effort to reduce Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, and other alcohol-related problems, the Lakehead University Campus Pub is installing a pregnancy test dispenser in the woman’s bathroom, as reported by the CBC.
The machines are labeled ‘Think Before You Drink”.
This was a follow-up effort from the Healthy Brains for Children group, who got their test dispenser into a bar called Pub 500 in Minneapolis as their first success. This got a lot of publicity. In fact, the strategy was outlined on an episode of The Doctors; the highlights can be seen in this video.
It’s possible that just the presence of these machines in licensed areas will act as a reminder to women to not drink if they are pregnant, or think they might be. For three bucks, they can find out for sure.
