Responsible Parenting and Alcohol

Recent research on brain development clearly indicates that the human brain is not fully developed until the age of 25. The developing brain is very susceptible to substance use. So why are parents offering their underage child alcohol at home?parent and youth drinking

A recent European report states that children introduced to alcohol to teach ‘responsible drinking’ run a higher risk of developing addictions.

How many times have you heard that? ‘I would rather my teenager drink at home than out drinking somewhere else. At least I know what they are doing?’

But maybe the reality is that if their teenager wasn’t offered alcohol at home, he or she wouldn’t be drinking alcohol at all. Anywhere.

What do you think?

  1. Absolutely. I am always astonished when parents choose to serve their underage kids alcohol at home. I have 3 teens and they are all well aware that it is illegal for them to consume alcohol under the age of 19 in Ontario – including our home. Conversation about alcohol however is encouraged and quite legal in our home!
