Energy drinks have caffeine and other additives that pose risks that have not been fully assessed. An article on the CBC website exposes the concerns of many medical professionals. In turn, these concerns are being put to the government in the hopes of change.
Energy drinks are often used as a mix for vodka and other liquor. While the pre-mixed versions of Red-Bull and vodka at the LCBO contain a less potent version of the energy drink (don’t tell your teens that), often the mixing is done in real time, at a party. With the real deal, there is a big kick of caffeine, sugar and other stimulants.
Unfortunately, the energy aspects of the mix increase the risk for binge drinking. This is because all that energy may mask the fatigue or other signals that might prompt a person to stop drinking.
