Summertime!

Summer is a wonderful time for family and friends, and provides opportunity for outdoor recreation. Yet, risky drinking often coincides with the fun.

Let’s list some classic summertime activities:

• Camping, boating, fishing
• Swimming, the beach, pool parties
• Barbequing, backyard parties, picnics
• Dirt biking, 4-wheeling
• Sightseeing, hiking
• Outdoor sports, beach volleyball, softball tournaments

How many of these things commonly involve alcohol? If you thought all of them, depending on the people and the venue, you’re probably right. Given certain circumstances, the event will have booze.

As an example, think about the risks inherent to involving alcohol with one of these activities: swimming. Alcohol impairs judgment and increases risk-taking. What happens? – swimming out too far, ignoring cold water, diving into shallow or rocky water. It doesn’t take much imagination to envision the consequences…all preventable and predictable!
