Parenting from a distance

Hard to believe but the summer is more than a month behind us. For some of our young people, this meant going off to university or college. Many are living away from home for the very first time: no curfews, no enforced bedtime and of course no on-site parental supervision.

As a parent who has had four children (Yes, I said FOUR!) go off to various post secondary institutions throughout Ontario over the past 10 years, believe me when I say I know how you feel sending your baby off into the ‘wild’. How can you protect them and keep them safe? Will they make good decisions?

Frosh week has long had a reputation for binge drinking and partying, sometimes with frightening consequences. This recent article from the University of Windsor talks about changing the focus from the typically alcohol-laden activities by offering a variety of other things to do.

Do you think that postsecondary institutions are doing enough to curb binge drinking on their campuses?
