A little while ago I read a great article in the Huntsville Forester. It followed a weekend of tragedy in our area and those of us who live up here in Muskoka feel these tragedies deeply. We hear the sirens, see the air ambulances in and out of our local hospitals and then read about the losses in the local papers. I agree with the writer of this article, as hosts we all share a responsibility in preventing these types of tragedies on our roads, our waterways and our trails:
“When we see a visitor heading out on the water without a personal flotation device, or diving off the dock after drinking alcohol under the hot sun, we should say something. We should remind them of the tragedies we witness every summer.”
Our social responsibility should extend to our communities as well as our homes. Be a good host.
