Warning for women and alcohol

Last fall, I had a conversation with a middle aged gentleman in which he told me that he and his wife each drink a bottle of wine daily. He was unaware of the increased risks to both of them … particularly his wife.

Women tend to develop problems related to alcohol use in a shorter time frame than men do. Usually, women’s bodies are smaller, have less water and metabolize or break down alcohol at a slower rate than men. Because of this, it takes women longer for their body to get rid of alcohol compared to men. And women who drink alcohol are at greater risk than men for developing certain cancers, such as oral, rectal and breast cancer.

Given the pressure in our society to consume alcohol, I wonder if the public is aware that women are at increased risk?  Not according to this article that I recently read…
